Description: I have a childhood memory sitting in the backseat of my father’s black and white station wagon. He is at the gas pump filling up, and I am looking out of the window counting along with the counters on the pump. I recall asking him what the counters were for. He explained one counter was for the cost per gallon, a second counter for the number of gallons, and the third counter for the total cost he paid. I was too young to understand the gas shortage during that time. However, I did understand the difference between Full-Service and Self-Service. Full-Service meant, for the price of a few more cents per gallon, the gas station attendant would fill up the tank, check under the hood and wash the windows. What has stuck with me is the cost of gasoline. In 1975, it was 52 cents per gallon. We will never see it that low again, and today, everyone pumps their own gas.
