Description: James Weldon Johnson wrote the lyrics to “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” in 1889 as a poem, and his brother, John Rosamond Johnson, set it to music. February 12, 1900, it was performed in Jacksonville, FL, by a chorus of 500 children in the segregated Stanton School where James Johnson was principal. It was part of a celebration of Lincoln’s birthday and Black History. “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” has come to be known in the United States as the Black or Negro National Anthem. The song will be played before NFL games, starting September 2020. The fabric appliqué for this piece is from the Loralie collection titled “Sing it Sister.”
