Title: Carolyn Somerville – Aurora, CO - “Scraps of Africa”

Description: As a lover of scraps and anything repurposed, I had African scraps in mind for my design. Using hand-appliqué on a woven African remnant, the leafy brown batik in her face represents the varied shades of skin we possess as African-American people. We have always been resourceful and able to take what others may believe is leftover or cast away and create something beautiful and useful. The hair I had imagined, did not work so I crowned her with a headdress, springing forth with fond memories of her African cultural heritage. Her eyes are wide open as she looks forward to a glorious future with the angels singing in her ears, “Keep on keeping on.”
