Description: Frida Kahlo was a Mexican artist mostly known for her self-portraits. She was born 6 July 1907 and died July 13, 1954. Around the age of 18, Frida was injured in a bus accident, and it was during her recovery that she started painting, although this was not the first art form she practiced. Frida’s paintings blend her pain and struggles with the vibrant colors and motifs of Mexican popular culture. Frida shared many quotes which can inspire one to carry on and transform pain into grace and beauty; however, the following struck me because I was a sensitive child and people were not so kind. Many of Frida’s quotes speak to me about my childhood experiences. From the things I favored, to my name and the color of my skin. These are some of Frida’s quotes which are my truth and helped me to understand me. • “I was a child who went about in a world of colors.” • “At the end of the day, we can endure much more than we think we can.” • “Nothing is worth more than laughter. It is strength to laugh and to abandon oneself, to be light. I think that little by little I’ll be able to solve my problems and survive.” • “I am my own muse. I am the subject I know best. The subject I want to know better. • “Well, I hope that if you are out there and read this and know that, yes, it’s true I’m here, and I’m just as strange as you.” I am fine just the way I am. I feel better being alone because if I criticize me, I can deal with me.
