Title: Chris Jacques “Cognitive Dissonance” - 12" x 12"

Description: “Cognitive dissonance” is the emotional pain which comes from acting in ways that conflict with a belief. For example, a doctor embarrassed about sneaking cigarettes will blame job stress for smoking. People will justify a hero’s behavior with far-fetched stories or a shift of the blame. If only George Floyd hadn’t resisted Officer Chauvin’s knee on his neck, he’d be here today. The 1964 Little Fruit Stand Riot went from a Harlem fruit vendor’s stand being knocked over to police beating everyone in the vicinity – suspects and witnesses, as well as implicating suspects in a murder without evidence. James Baldwin neatly framed the cognitive dissonance between words and deeds in that case.
